Tiffany Amariuta speaking at UN Youth Forum

Tiffany Amariuta was one of 70 students chosen from a pool of over 1,200 entrants from 42 countries who submitted to the “Many Languages, One World” international essay contest. The essay contest is organized by ELS Educational Services, INC. and the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI).

During the past week, Tiffany, along with other finalists, participated in the UN Youth Forum on Global Sustainable Development at Adelphi University in New York. Workshops and discussions culminated with a presentation at the UN Headquarters on Friday, July 24, where Tiffany presented in Russian, along with other members of the group.

The topic of the Russian-language presenters was “Ensuring availability and sustainability management of water and sanitation for all.” The list of Russian-language presenters included students from Belarus, Belgium, Georgia, Ghana, Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and the United States.

Tiffany (MIT Class of 2015, Course 20, Biological Engineering) has studied Russian at the Global Studies and Languages section at MIT with “remarkable results,” having only started learning Russian over IAP in 2014, and “achieving so much in such a short time,” according to Maria Khotimsky, MIT’s Russian-language coordinator. She is a recent recipient of GSL Excellence in Foreign Languages Award. Tiffany is “an inspiring example of a promising young scientist who makes the best of her training in the humanities,” Khotimsky said.

This summer Tiffany is participating in MISTI Russia internship at the Laboratory of Algorithmic Biology in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
