MIT Through Global Languages

There is no such thing as a “typical” student of Global Languages. Whether learning a “second” language for the first or fifth time, the reasons for learning a language or studying global cultures are many, and the opportunities for students and graduates are vast. Here you’ll find some of our graduates’ stories: of heritage learning, career aspirations, cross-cultural understanding, and more.

  • Tiffany Amariuta SB ’15, Bio Engineering major, studied French and Russian, participant in January Scholars in France program in 2015
  • Virginia Adams SB ’18, computer science major, minor in Chinese, had MISTI internship with Chinese tech giant TenCent in Schenzhen, China VIDEO
  • Jordan Alford SB ’20, double major in Chemical Engineering and Spanish
  • Max Allen SB ’20, computer science and engineering student who studied Chinese
  • Erika Arias SB ’18, biology major, heritage learner of Japanese and Spanish, and recipient of the 2017 Global Languages Award for Excellence
  • Abby Bertics SB ’19, major in Computer Science major and a minor in Linguistics, student of Russian. Was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to spend a year in Yekaterinburg, Russia
  • Nancy Chen SB ’13, double major in management science and political science, Asian and Asian Diaspora Studies minor track

  • Riley Davis SB ’19, double major in German and mechanical engineering
  • Michael Fincke SB ’89, astronaut, student of Russian
  • Joseph Han SB ’17, student of Korean, Spanish, and Chinese, Air Force ROTC member, and recipient of a 2017 Distinguished Scholar Award from Global Languages
  • Charles Huang SB ’11, management science major, Chinese minor
  • Kaleigh Hunt SB ’20, double major in Chemical Engineering and German, recipient of a 2020 Award for Excellence and first prize 2020 German Studies Excellence Award
  • Joanna Lin SB ’21, double major in Biology and French
  • Marie Menshova SB ’17, electrical engineering and computer science major, French minor, and recipient of a 2017 Distinguished Scholar Award from Global Languages
  • Anjali Nambrath SB ’21, double major in math and physics, minor in Freench. Participant in January Scholars in France program in 2020
  • Johannes Norheim SB’16, SM’18, student of aerospace engineering, Chinese, and Russian
  • Mojolaoluwa Oke (“Mojo”) is an undergraduate student at MIT, class of 2022, majoring in mechanical engineering and minoring in Japanese.
  • Samira Okudo SB ’19, double major in computer science and comparative media studies, student of Spanish, winner the 2019 Fulbright U.S. Student Fellowship Program
  • Valeria Robayo SB ‘23,  major in management and a minor in German. First Prize winner of the 2022 German Studies Excellence Award
  • Piper Sigrest SB ’18, AeroAstro major, with minor in Russian and Eurasian Studies
  • Josh Woodard SB ’18, mechanical engineering major, Chinese minor, recipient of 2018 Schwarzman Scholarship – VIDEO by Josh on Why Study Chinese
  • Sefa Yakpo SB ’19, double major in management science and French, wrote a senior honors thesis in Francophone African Studies, participant in January Scholars in France program in 2018
