The Story of an Unsuccessful Movement
David Paternotte, Assistant Professor, Free University of Brussels
After decades of steady progress in terms of gender and sexual rights, several parts of Europe are facing new waves of resistance. These movements oppose the so-called ‘gender ideology,’ and unveil a crucial role of the Roman
Catholic Church. Belgium stands out as an intriguing exception. This talk will give an overview of anti-gender movements in Europe and explore some of the reasons explaining Belgian exceptionality.
David Paternotte is an assistant professor of political science at the Université libre de Bruxelles. After many years of research on same-sex marriage and LGBTQI activism, his work concentrates on the rise of various forms of opposition to gender and sexual equality in Europe.
