“The Chinese in Paris, the French in Beijing:Jean Yanne’s 1974 Les Chinois à Paris and Georges Pompidou’s official visit”

This talk will discuss research about two major media events in Franco-Chinese relations of the mid 1970s. The first was the filming of Jean Yanne’s big-budget comedy Les Chinois à Paris in the summer of 1973, which sparked a minor diplomatic scandal with the People’s Republic of China. The second was the first French presidential visit to the PRC in September of 1973. Using archival documents, photographs, and film criticism, this talk will examine these events as key moments in the history of France’s fascination with Maoism and China writ large.
