Jane Dunphy, GSL senior lecturer in English Language Studies, was invited to spend spring 2015 semester at Yasar University in Izmir, Turkey, as visiting faculty in the School of Foreign Languages. Yasar is one of many Turkish universities in which English is the medium of instruction. Dunphy is interested in seeing how English as a lingua franca serves this academic community.

During her stay, she is working with Yasar’s SoFL faculty on curriculum design and teacher training; giving seminars/workshops on a variety of professional communication topics at other universities in Turkey.

Her presentations have included:

  • March 5, 2015: “Teaching writing across academic cultures: What theory can offer writing instructors in the internationalized university,”  paper at the Language in Focus: Contemporary Perspectives on Theory, Research, and Praxis in ELT and SLA, Goreme, Turkey.
  • March 7, 2015: “Current English Language Teaching (ELT) Methodologies & Classroom Applications,”  paper and Chair of Academic Panel, Language in Focus: Contemporary Perspectives on Theory, Research, and Praxis in ELT and SLA, Goreme, Turkey.
  • March 19, 2015: Invited interviews with Education Editors of Hurriyet Newspaper and Milliyet Newspaper on English Medium of Instruction movement in higher education.
  • April 3, 2015: Everything’s an Argument,  workshop in designing scaffolded assignments across the curriculum, Yasar University, Izmir, Turkey.
