MIT students will be able to sign up for a new joint class being offered this spring in Quarter 4. Humanities Professor Emma Teng and Lead Wellness Instructor Sarah Johnson are teaming up to teach 21G.015 Introduction to Buddhism, Mindfulness, and Meditation (Teng) and its companion class, PE.0534 Fitness and Meditation (Johnson), in true mens et manus style. Quarter 4 dates are 3/30- 5/9. Students should make sure to register for BOTH subjects in order to enroll.
Companion to the Fitness and Meditation class offered through MIT’s Wellness program. Introduces students to the basic ideas of Buddhism, the history of Buddhism’s transmission through East Asia, and core aspects of the philosophy of Humanistic Buddhism, including the role of meditation and mindfulness in Buddhist practice. Includes hands-on activities. Meets with the MIT Wellness Fitness and Meditation class; students must enroll in both to participate. Subject can count toward the 6-unit discovery-focused credit limit for first-year students. Limited to 18. 21G.015 meets Thursday afternoons, 4-5pm, from March 31 to May 5, in the Z-Center Media Room.
This wellness course will cover a variety of meditation techniques, including mindfulness, body scans, labeling thoughts, Gatha and Metta meditations, guided imagery, walking, eating and group meditations. Fitness and movement principles will be taught to train the mind and body. This class is connected to 21G.015 Introduction to Buddhism, Mindfulness, and Meditation. Students must also be enrolled in 21G.015 to participate. PE.0534 meets Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 5-6pm, March 31 to May 5. PE Course catalog • PE Quarterly Schedule (The quarterly schedule is added at least 3 days before registration opens). The Fitness and Meditation sessions will be held in the Dupont MultiPurpose Room and the course counts as 2 Physical Education and Wellness points towards the GIR.
