In January 2018, Professor Bruno Perreau led a trip to Paris with seven GSL students as part of the 2018 January Scholars in France program. Activities included visits, concerts, conferences given by experts in their field, but also dinners and immersion in Paris’ cultural and daily life.
This year students explored the history of street revolutions of the 18th and 19th centuries, the student movements of May 1968, issues of public transportation in different districts of Paris, but also new major architectural projects and street art.
They met with Opera principal dancer, Germain Louvet, who gave them a private tour of the Palais Garnier. They saw the ballet Don Quichotte at the Bastille Opera, the theater play La Règle du Jeu at the Comédie française, the movie La Villa by Robert Guédiguian at the MK2 Parnasse, and also enjoyed the music of Dvorák, Ravel and Bloch at the new Philharmonic concert hall in the north of Paris.
And, of course, the group enjoyed some of the best meals of the city, and also had free time for their own experiences. They discovered the city of Bordeaux in the South West of France, the “Catacombes”, and the unavoidable parisian January sales! It was such a fantastic experience for everyone!
