Tong Chen is a Lecturer in Chinese, teaching from introductory through advanced levels in the Regular language track, including regularly leading 21G.105 Chinese V (Regular): Discovering Chinese Cultures and Societies. He has taught at MIT for over 20 years, prior to which he was an instructor at universities in China and the United States. Chen has also led instruction of Chinese in Middlebury Languages Schools’ summer program and served as president of the New England Chinese Language Teacher’s Association.

He is the author or editor of multiple textbooks for Chinese language learners, and Chinese learners of English. Most recently, he edited the textbook Teaching Basic Chinese Grammar (2020).

Tong Chen’s pedagogical foci include multimedia in Chinese language education, and second language pedagogy. He was an early adopter of Skype and the messaging application QQ to foster intercultural and cross-linguistic exchange between MIT and Chinese university students.
