Alexander Lee, an experienced English teacher in China with a passion for Chinese tea culture, and Yaya Tang, who manages a five-star Michelin restaurant in China, spoke to students in 21G.105 Chinese V students on Friday, October 27.

Lee and Tang, who are husband and wife, spoke on “Understanding Chinese Romanticism, Marriage, and Family through Tea Culture,” offering students a first-hand perspective on cultural life in China.

The speakers discussed tea’s role in everyday Chinese life and its connections to marriage customs among ethnic groups, emphasizing the significance of the bride and groom serving tea to each other’s parents during weddings.

The talk was followed by a lively discussion. Students also enjoyed the Chinese tea ceremony and sampled renowned Chinese tea.

The speakers were invited by Tong Chen, Lecturer in Chinese, so that students could connect the talks’ content to the class curriculum.
