The January Scholars in France (JSF) is a selective program that recognizes outstanding MIT undergraduates in French Studies. Each year, a small group of participants is selected to spend two weeks in Paris for an intensive program of linguistic and cultural immersion.
Although the program was originally created as a January opportunity, it is now held either in January or in June, depending on the year. In 2026, the program will take place in June.
The program is led by members of the MIT French instructional staff, in collaboration with experts based in Paris. Students explore French culture through guided visits, talks, and meetings with specialists, as well as through the daily experience of Parisian life. MIT covers all program costs, including airfare, housing, and group activities. The program does not grant academic credit, and no grade is given.
Eligibility: Applications are open only to currently enrolled MIT undergraduates. Preference is given to French majors, minors, and concentrators, as well as students who have shown a strong and sustained interest in French Studies are encouraged to apply.
