Kang Zhou is a Lecturer in Chinese. He regularly teaches at all levels of the regular curriculum track and the lower-intermediate level of the streamlined curriculum track. Since 2018, Zhou has developed and led the course 21G.111: Chinese Calligraphy. Prior to joining MIT in 2015, he taught at Brown University and Harvard University, and he also led instruction in Chinese at Middlebury Language Schools’ summer program.

Together with Senior Lecturer Haohsiang Liao, Zhou co-authored Beginning Mandarin Chinese Characters(2019) and Intermediate Mandarin Chinese Characters(2021). He also presents frequently on Chinese pedagogy and learner topics at meetings of the Chinese Language Teachers Association and ACTFL.

Zhou’s pedagogical interests include instructional technology, project-based learning, fostering learner communities in the classroom, and incorporating asynchronous materials into language learning. In his Chinese calligraphy teaching, he also extends course resources through MIT Open Courseware, explores connections between calligraphy pedagogy and STEM fields, and incorporates mindful writing practices to support student focus, reflection, and well-being.
