Formal Writing in Japanese

The Japanese formal writing system uses numerous rules, conventions, specific expressions and vocabulary that are quite different from those used in the spoken language. Without acquiring this knowledge, the students’ written work would remain full of colloquialisms, preventing it from reaching beyond intermediate level. This project aims to help students master the formal writing system of Japanese, a qualification for advanced level writing proficiency. The systematic technology-enhanced method accelerates the learning process. The website『書き言葉レッスン』introduces this integrated instructional method and teaching materials for Japanese formal writing, as well as samples of learning outcomes. It also provides tips for teachers to incorporate formal writing instruction into their existing curricula.
